AND - Club Notes - 5th of July 2009

Senior/Junior Football

Following the reschedule from last Sunday and the subsequent reschedule of the eagerly awaited local derby against Galway, the Senior team got off to their first win of the year against an evenly matched Cork. Right from the get go, the game was entertaining, following a few early scores from each team, Cork pierced the Armagh Notre Dame defense and scored a fine goal against Armagh keeper Ciaran Malloy. However this only seemed to boost Armagh, who responded well with some great scores from Darren Gilsenan, Gavin Gilsenan, along with Damien Burke. Not to be outdone additional scores came from Kildare man, Neil Jordan, with a well executed free kick off the ground from about 40 yards out. With Armagh on the ascendency, Darren Gilsenan made a great run only to be pulled down in the Cork square. Neil Jordan placed the ball to the bottom left hand corner, only to be denied by a great save from the Cork goalkeeper, following the rebound, Cork moved the ball up the field and scored the last point of the half. Half time score Armagh Notre Dame 0-9, Cork 1-8. On the restart Armagh continued with their strong running, scooping up breaking ball from the dominant Brian Boylan and Gavin Gilsenan. Not to be outdone with the new arrivals, Fermanagh’s own Darren Maguire, scored 2 well take goals to put Armagh ahead on the board. More points from Darren Gilsenan appeared to seal the victory. However as the 2nd half progressed, Cork had a man sent off after striking Martin Tiffney. As is typical with many matches in the modern game, Cork rallied to create 2 goal scoring changes only to be denied by Glenswilly net minder Ciaran Malloy. Cork continued to push on and their hard work was rewarded with 2 well taken goals, leaving the Armagh Keeper with little chance. Armagh eventually held out for a well deserved win, on a scoreline of Armagh Notre Dame 3-13, Cork 3-10. All the players can be very proud of their performances, they did the club proud.

The Juniors competed against Galway at 230PM and following a great start went in at half time 1-6 to 1-3 ahead. However as the 2nd half progressed Galway bolstered with some new blood from Ireland ran away with the game. Final Score Armagh Notre Dame 1-8 Galway 6-12. Best for Armagh were Shane McKenna and Gavin Hall. With the holidays, Armagh were very short handed, however the Juniors showed some good moves, and took some good scores.
